Gloria Fashion Show 2016

Dressing up, is one of my pick me ups. Seeing people well dressed, is like going to an art gallery for the art lovers. I enjoy every moment of it. When I was a teenager, I changed my clothes about 3 times in a day. I did not realise this, until somebody pointed it out. I was so surprised , one might have thought he was speaking of someone else. I spent the past two weeks planning an outfit for a fashion show. I knew what I was going to wear but the pressure was on when I found out I would be on the front row. I love fashion shows! I love clothes in ways words cannot describe. I feel that dressing well can change one's life and even attitude.

Midsummer Glow

Midsummer has been known to rain and or to be cloudy. Well, depending on which part of the country one is. This past weekend, has been no exception with the latter. My blogging life depends entirely on the weather. I decided to take a nap earlier because I had given up on the possibility of daylight. I kept looking out the window, even though there was a heavy cloud. Every time I'm faced with a great decision or a challenge, I say a little prayer and take a nap. That can end up being a few hours or the standard nap time. It all depends on the magnitude of the solution. It's like waking up to a new day with a fresh mind. It's an incredibly powerful tool.

La Joie De Vivre (The Joy of Living)

The image of Otis chewing gum while fixing his wire and rubber toy car,is forever ingrained in my mind...his rich dark skin and how he tilted his head to the side when he was concentrating. The only other person I have seen chewing gum like that, is Brad Pitt in Oceans 11. I don’t remember him speaking much, but I was so mesmerised in  his presence, that there was no need for words. He made toy cars for most of the boys and he enjoyed the attention they gave him when there was a loose wire . Those were the moments I stole to sit next to him and watch him chew gum, while he repaired the toy cars. There is something about watching people do what they love or know.  He most likely never even knew how so smitten I was.  He was to me the most beautiful boy I had ever seen. As a family, we spoke about him and his family often. At the age of 9, I could speak freely about a boy without raising any suspicion.

No Limits

I'm going to begin with a quote that I love so much, but never quite experienced the truth of it until recently. " There are no limits except those in our minds". A few months ago, I had a bathroom renovation that went on for months. I could not wait for it to be complete, so that I could do all the things  it was holding me back from doing. I made promises and a reasonable amount of excuses during this period. Every time I arrived home, my obstacle was staring me right in the face. I enjoy cooking and house parties and this became a great inconvenience for that. I had an estimated date of completion and as a result, promised my friends great things as soon as it was ready  and pushed any important visits towards the end of that month.

I have a dream, to travel the world photographing all these beautiful people who have maintained their way of being and expression. Today, I'm honouring my heritage with these words and deed. With words, I say thank you, and in deed I dedicate this outfit to the Maasai people.

Maasai Mode

a compliation of three images; a woman is wearing a maasai print wrap, Underneath her wrap she is wearing a white top, a pair of red shorts, and black outdoor boots.

I have been on a Maasai type of mood for as long as I can remember. A friend on a recent trip to Nairobi, was kind enough to bring me three blankets. This awakened the Maasai that might be in me. I have admired their determination to uphold tradition, despite opposition and modernisation. I wanted to honour this tradition, by making something I might be able to use for a long time, instead of just using the blankets  for picnics. I do hope this is an appropriate way to do so.

I Come in Peace

I come in peace. It's been awhile since I posted anything. This past week, I was under the weather and I'm happy to report that all is well. The previous week, well, that is why I come in peace. It's been heart wrenching to watch the world and my people rot in hatred and discrimination. My greatest desire, is for every human being to understand that we are all equal.  The story of this fabric is one of hatred. I have told you stories before of how I buy my fabrics, so you can imagine I am a regular customer. I have felt very uncomfortable at times and when I have taken someone with me, they end up leaving me behind because they cannot stand the treatment.

Slits

Now that our summer is almost here, I feel like being free. I say our summer, because  the rest of Europe is enjoying a fair amount of sunshine by now. Nothing says free like a maxi dress or skirt. These are my absolute summer staples. Besides the fact that they make me feel flirty, sexy, beautiful and feminine, they can be dressed up or down. Can we say the S word here? Well I guess it's ok :). I had a strong desire to wear a slit, so I went ahead to gratify myself with a maxi skirt. My initial plan, was to make a dress but after much pacing in the room, making a skirt made more sense because It would be versatile.

My favourite thing about films is the costumes. It is through them that we understand the nature of the character. Whether they are rich or poor, a superhero or evil, It's all in the costumes. It's also the way we go back in time. I love classic outfits. I find them very flattering to a woman's body, and absolutely sexy. I wanted to go back in time a little bit with this outfit. Well, to be honest, I think I live there. I love how feminine women were back then.
